You may not get it just by looking, but once he explains it, you’re going to lose you sh!t:
Josh Welch, 17, came to school for ‘Culture Day’ dressed in all black shirt, pants, and beanie. When asked, he explained he was a thief, stealing everyone else’s culture.
It started as a harmless gag. He was trolling the internet, “trying to find an aspect of white culture to poke fun at for culture day,” according to Welch.
“The idea just happened to dawn on me, and I knew I had to do it.”
Not many people got it at first. Josh was forced to explain it to everyone who asked, and the reactions were mixed:
“When they understood it, everyone freaked out. Some people laughed their asses off and others were shocked,” says Josh. In particular, there was one ‘conservative teacher’ who, “[explained] how I ‘shouldn’t make political statements with my costumes.’”
But the naysayers are few and far between. Josh uploaded the photo to Twitter and has garnered nearly 40,000 retweets, with most giving huge props to the clever, hilarious, and socially impactful costume.
“It far surpassed what little impact I thought it may have,” Josh said. “I love it, spreading humor and awareness at the same time.”
