Black On The Outside, White On The Inside: Bakery Names Oreo-Based Cupcake 'Mr. President', Is It Racist?
The Twist

Want to play a game called ‘Is it Racist?’ Here’s your first topic: an Oregon bakery is under fire for naming an Oreo-based cupcake ‘Mr. President’.

Let’s break this down...

Anjelica Hayes opened her new shop, Fat Cupcake, just over a month ago. So far, business has been good – although the Yelp reviews are a different matter.

The criticism isn’t about the baking. Rather, customers are having big reactions to the names of some of the products being offered. One item has already had a name change – ‘The Intern’, who's description is now unavailable, was thought to be a jab at the Clintons and Monica Lewinsky. We suspect cream filling was involved.

But lately it’s ‘The President’ that’s getting criticized. It’s described as an “Oreo Cookie baked inside white cake, cookies n’ cream buttercream,” which many visitors to Fat Cupcake think is a jab at Obama’s mixed race heritage.

Hayes sounds like she’s sick of being questioned. “I have been asked this so may times,” she told reporters.

The she adds, for the record, “I myself am black.”

But even if that weren’t the case, she maintains that the name isn’t inspired by Obama. “What sounds like it would be really fancy?” Hayes said. “We thought of the presidential office,” because that would be fitting to honor such a delicious pastry.

“I just thought it was an honorary name. I thought I’d be honored if someone named a cupcake after me.”

What’s more, she was later told that Obama’s favorite cookie is the Oreo, so the name took on even more coincidental significance.

But that explanation hasn’t stopped the haters. Multiple customers have complained and taken their angst to Yelp, where they’ve left judgmental reviews citing Hayes insensitivity.

So what do you think – is it racist?
